tanya maxwell
Tanya’s practice in 3D design has evolved from a background in textiles and physical theatre. Improvisational and tactile, bionomic forms in a series of gestures with wood, natural fibre, bone and sometimes metal. Finding meaning and enjoyment, weaving stories of connection and belonging to nature and community making.
A collaborative Arts Tasmania Wilderness Residency with Gwen Egg on Maria Island in 2016/17 transitioned Tanya's study of furniture making and weaving toward a freer, improvised and whimsical approach of following material attributes to find form. This approach leads a client centred, trauma informed space where Tanya follows the person to find an activity they can connect with.
Honing this sensitivity over a 20 year career in Arts in Health as a Medical Clown, Artist, Facilitator, Consultant and mentor.
Tanya regularly works as an artist and facilitator in Dementia and Mental Healthcare. In 2024 undertook a 12 week Art Residency at the Repatriation Hospital culminating in the curation of a group exhibition titled "Coming Out of the Woods".
Artist and Facilitator roles in healthcare, education, community, corporate and private events.
